Rev. Dr. Lester A. McCorn Named 16th President of Paine College

Augusta, GA – A wave of excitement is sweeping through Paine College as the institution announces its newest leader, the Rev. Dr. Lester A. McCorn. Effective January 1, McCorn will take on the role of the 16th president of this historically Black college. His appointment comes after a comprehensive review process, and it seems that the school has found a *dynamic leader* in McCorn, known for his reputation in transformational leadership in higher education.

Setting the Stage for Change

Former Georgia Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond, who also happens to be a proud graduate of Paine, was enthusiastic in his support for McCorn. He noted, “Dr. McCorn is a proven leader who has demonstrated a clear and concise vision for institutional change, while identifying and executing a comprehensive plan designed to achieve successful student outcomes.” This is a critical endorsement as Paine College enters a new chapter in its history, especially in the wake of Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones’ recent retirement.

Jones, who served as interim president in July 2019 before officially taking the reins three months later, left behind a legacy that included *over 30 years of dedicated service* to Paine College. She played an instrumental role in the school’s Transformation Plan, a significant initiative that McCorn will now carry forward. With his track record, there’s a palpable sense of optimism about the future.

A Wealth of Experience

Before stepping into his new role at Paine College, McCorn was leading Clinton College in Rock Hill, SC, for the past seven years. Though Clinton College is smaller, with fewer than 200 students, it shares similarities with Paine’s current enrollment of about 310 students for the fall of 2023.

During his tenure at Clinton, McCorn achieved some remarkable milestones. Most notably, he successfully added five bachelor’s degree programs, which included popular fields like *nursing and cybersecurity*. These areas have been significant focuses for nearby institutions, such as Augusta University and Augusta Tech, indicating that Dr. McCorn is well aware of the needs and demands of today’s job market.

Under his leadership, Clinton College also saw the establishment of the first Digital Library and Learning Commons at a historically Black college, which is quite the achievement! This creation included a state-of-the-art cybersecurity lab and new facilities dedicated to academic excellence, including faculty offices and a writing lab. Most recently, he oversaw the introduction of a nursing simulation lab—a critical asset for students preparing for careers in healthcare.

Looking Ahead

The community at Paine College is buzzing about what McCorn will bring to the table. His record suggests a strong commitment to improving student outcomes and strengthening the institution’s academic programs. As he steps into his new role, many are hopeful that he will continue to build on the achievements of his predecessor while advancing Paine College to even greater heights.

With the new year just around the corner, it’s a thrilling time for both staff and students at Paine College. McCorn’s leadership style promises to foster an environment of growth and innovation as he guides the college forward.

A Community in Transition

As the college community prepares for this transition, the unified spirit they have shown, especially in the face of recent challenges, will undoubtedly help them welcome their new president. Many are eager to work alongside Dr. McCorn to keep the momentum going and build a brighter future for all students.

As we await January and McCorn’s formal assumption of office, one thing is clear: the next chapter at Paine College is set to be an exciting one!
