Exciting News from Augusta: A Boost for Local STEM Education!
In the heart of Augusta, there’s been a wave of excitement as two local elementary schools are set to benefit from a generous donation aimed at enhancing their science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education programs. Thanks to the efforts of Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), these schools are ready to take their learning experiences to new heights!
Making a Difference
SRMC’s pledge of $30,000 was split evenly, with $15,000 going to A. Dorothy Hains Elementary School and another $15,000 for Barnwell Elementary School. This initiative isn’t a one-time wonder; SRMC had previously invested the same amount in 2023, which resulted in incredible advancements for both schools. After witnessing the improvements first-hand during visits to the schools in September, SRMC President and Program Manager Dave Olson couldn’t help but express his enthusiasm.
“The improvements were outstanding,” Olson reflected. “Both STEM programs had grown substantially with new equipment and materials that significantly enhanced student learning. It was amazing to see the fifth graders working as teams, honing their problem-solving and analytical skills. The growth we’ve seen so far is just the beginning—imagine what they can accomplish with even more resources!”
Students Energized and Engaged
At A. Dorothy Hains, the excitement among students is palpable. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Andrea Roberts shared how the program’s integration of coding and robotics has transformed their learning environment. “Our students are really thriving,” she said, beaming with pride. “They are not only problem-solving but also analyzing data together using state-of-the-art STEM materials purchased with SRMC funding. We’ve even woven current affairs and grammar into their coding exercises!”
In Barnwell, the atmosphere is equally vibrant, as the school aims to expand its media room thanks to the recent funding. Franklin McCormack, the Assistant School Superintendent, told us about the success of their media team. “The broadcasts created by our students have sparked massive interest among their peers,” he noted. “Students are actively applying for leadership roles in our Broadcast and Journalism Program, which is allowing us to expand our capabilities!”
What’s Next for STEM Education?
With the new infusion of $15,000 for each school, the sky’s the limit for what these young minds can achieve. The funds will not only continue building upon the incredible foundation set last year but also help explore new avenues for learning. The students’ enthusiasm and the educators’ commitment point to even more success in their future endeavors!

Together, they are dedicated to effectively managing the cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site while supporting local communities.
