Nearly 300 Volunteers from Savannah River Site Join Forces for Day of Caring

In the heart of Aiken, a significant event unfolded on March 21, when approximately 300 employees from the Savannah River Site (SRS) took part in the 29th annual Day of Caring organized by the United Way of Aiken. This day was a wonderful showcase of community spirit, as volunteers came together to lend a hand through Project VISION (Volunteers in Service in Our Neighborhoods).

Teamwork in Action

Volunteers included dedicated individuals from several organizations, such as Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, Savannah River Mission Completion, Battelle Savannah River Alliance, and Savannah River National Laboratory. Their collective efforts focused on various tasks that made a tremendous difference in the community. From doing yard work to demolition projects, building wheelchair ramps, and fixing gutters, these hardworking teams made their mark across 20 different worksites.

This year, 15 worksites were partnered with the United Way of Aiken County, while the remaining 5 were local residential homes that required repairs and handicap accommodations. The activities at these partner agencies were diverse. Volunteers engaged in tasks like landscaping, painting, pressure washing, and even helped relocate one agency to a new home, ensuring the day was both productive and rewarding for all involved.

Organizations Making a Difference

Several well-known local organizations beautified and improved their facilities thanks to the efforts of these volunteers. Among the agencies involved were:

  • Girl Scouts of South Carolina: Mountains to the Midlands
  • ACTS of Aiken and Graniteville
  • North Augusta YMCA
  • Child Advocacy Center of Aiken County
  • Tri-Development Center (various locations)
  • Helping Hands
  • The Salvation Army (multiple locations)

Notably, one volunteer group built a remarkable 41-foot wheelchair ramp for a neighbor, highlighting how this initiative directly supports those in need within the community.

The Community Collaboration

The event was not just about completing tasks; it served as a fantastic platform for bonding and teamwork among participants. Many volunteers noted how blessed they felt to contribute to their community, reinforcing the idea that giving back is essential.

This year’s Day of Caring saw a surge of enthusiasm as there were several first-time leaders stepping up at different worksites. New volunteers enthusiastically joined the ranks, bringing fresh energy and skills to the event. The Director of Project VISION expressed gratitude toward the employees for their support on this day, emphasizing how their involvement impacts the community tremendously.

Spreading Joy and Making Improvements

The work done during this event allowed participating agencies to save both time and money, which they can now redirect towards fulfilling their community missions. Volunteers spread their skills across various towns, including Monetta, Wagener, Trenton, Beech Island, and North Augusta. Beautification projects were a focus as participants stained ramps and planted flowers at the Girl Scout Hut, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the space.

The spirit of camaraderie and community service was palpable, as employees and volunteers alike felt the joy of working together towards a common goal. Even distinguished guests from the Executive Leadership Team visited sites to show appreciation and encourage the unwavering efforts put forth by the volunteers.
